Irene Peterson Death, Funeral Information,President of the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County
The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County is deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved president, Irene Peterson. Her departure leaves a profound void in our hearts and in our community, but her extraordinary legacy of compassion and service will endure forever.

Irene’s journey with the HSDMC began in 2000, and she was elected president the following year. Over the past quarter-century, her visionary leadership fundamentally transformed our organization and exponentially expanded our ability to serve animals and families. When she first joined, the shelter operated from a modest building on N. Edward Street. Driven by her dedication, she helped secure a rental facility in Northgate Plaza, offering animals a safer haven for years. A decade ago, she achieved another monumental milestone: guiding the purchase of our first permanent shelter building, securing a stable future for our mission.
Yet, Irene dreamed even bigger. Her vision for a community spay and neuter clinic to combat animal overpopulation became a triumphant reality this past January. The clinic, a testament to her perseverance, has already served over 300 animals, ensuring her impact will resonate for generations.
Irene’s true measure, however, was not in buildings or programs, but in selfless action. She dedicated countless hours to the most vulnerable—bottle-feeding orphaned kittens through the night, humanely trapping cats for TNR programs, and personally caring for shelter residents. She managed endless paperwork, coordinated volunteers, and was the steadfast engine ensuring the shelter’s daily operation. Her compassion was boundless, her determination unwavering, and her love for animals touched thousands of lives.
Because of Irene’s tireless heart, innumerable animals received second chances and loving homes. Her extraordinary kindness has left an indelible mark on our organization and community.
Thank you, Irene, for your decades of service, your guiding leadership, and the boundless love you gave to every creature and person you encountered. Your presence will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on through every life you saved and every paw print you helped place in a caring home.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Irene’s family, friends, and all who were privileged to know this remarkable force for good.
Irene’s vision and dedication clearly shaped the Humane Society in remarkable ways. Her efforts to secure a permanent shelter and establish the spay and neuter clinic demonstrate how thoughtful planning can create lasting benefits for both animals and the community. It’s inspiring to see the tangible impact of her leadership over the years.
